Orientamento

La città è divisa in quartieri: NE (north east), SE (south east), SW (south west), NW (north west) . La parte dove starete di più è North West. La parte East era fino ad una decina di anni fa pericolosa, ora lo sono solo alcune zone. Le strade sono nominate in successione, “orizzontalmente” (andando verso Nord) con le lettere dell’alfabeto (A street, B street, C street…) e “verticalmente” (da est a ovest) con numeri in successione (10Th street, 11th stree, 12th street…Th è l’abbreviazione per il numero ordinale (es. quattordicesima).

Washington fa parte del “District of Columbia (DC)” (la suddivisione amministrativa degli Stati Americani) ed è comunemente chiamata anche solo “DC”.

                                  

MUOVERSI

- METRO comodissima (quattro linee, aperta fino alle 2 di notte), ma costosa: la metro card costa attorno ai 5$ ma vi da tariffe più basse, utile se si resta per qualche giorno). Un biglietto della metro costa 2-3 $ dipendendo da dove si vuole andare. Se si resta per un paio di giorni, consiglierei A PIEDI e TAXI, e BICI

- BUS tariffa media: 1,80$ pagabile a bordo

- TAXI poco costosi, sempre tra i 8$ e 12$. Se siete più di uno è la cosa più semplice.

-  Se vi piace la BICI assolutamente da provare il Capitol Bike Sharing. Più di 500 stazioni di biciclette (con circa 10-15 biciclette per una) da prendere attraverso una carta e depositare in un’altra stazione. I primi 30 min per ogni volta sono gratuiti, quindi prendete la bici e la rilasciate dopo poco perchè c’’e sempre una stazione dove lasciarla prima che finiscano i 30 minuti) http://www.capitalbikeshare.com/stations. Molto utile il pass da tre giorni ($15).

Orientation

Washington is part of the "District of Columbia (DC)" (the administrative division of American States) and is commonly called just "DC".

The city is divided into districts: NE (north east), SE (south east), SW (south west), NW (north west). The part where you will most probably stick to is North West. The East side was kind of dangerous until about ten years ago dangerous, but now it's getting better and better.  The streets are named in succession, "horizontally" (going North) with the letters of the alphabet (A Street, B Street, C Street ...) and "vertically" (east-west) with numbers in succession (10th street, 11th stree, 12th street ...)

Transportation

- METRO comfortable (four lines, open until 2 am), but expensive: the metro card costs around $ 5, but gives you the lowest rates, it's useful if you paln to stay for a few days). A single ridecosts $ 2-3 depending on where you want to go. 

If you stay for a couple of days, I would recommend FOOT and TAXI, and BIKE

- BUS average fee: $ 1.80 payable on board

- TAXI inexpensive, always between $ 8 and $ 12. If you are more than one is the easiest way to move around

- If you like biking you must try the Capitol Bike Sharing. More than 500 bicycle stations (with about 10-15 bikes each) to be taken through a card and deposit in another station. The first 30 minutes are free of charge for every time. http://www.capitalbikeshare.com/stations
