Passeggiata a Verona

                                             

Qualche ora per i must see e poi spazio per una passeggiata libera per le vie del centro.Cominciate dall’Arena e piazza Bra, poi fatevi un giro per gli eleganti negozi del corso, arrivate fino a Piazza Erbe, prima di girare a destra in Corso Porto Borsari per godervi il balcone di Romeo o Giulietta. Tornate sui vostri passi fino a Piazza delle Erbe, visitate le Arche Scaligere, ammirando la torre dei Lamberti e la Scala della Ragione. Da lì svoltate in Vicolo Crocioni e godetevi un caffè speciale al Caffè Mattei.

Per scoprire le chiese di Verona fatevi una passeggiata in centro visitando Santa Anastasia, San Fermo e il Duomo (o scegliete il percorso storico) e se il tempo lo consente finite in bellezza con una passeggiata panoramica sopra i giardini dell’arsenale o godendovi la vista dal Teatro Romano.

Excursion to Verona

Start from the Arena and Piazza Bra, then take a walk in the Corso, for window shopping in elegant shops. Continue straight till Piazza Erbe, before turning right into Corso Porto Borsari to enjoy the balcony of Romeo and Juliet. Walk back to Piazza delle Erbe, visit the Scaliger Tombs and admire the Lamberti tower and La Scala della Ragione. From there, turn in Vicolo Crocioni and indulge in a special coffee at the Caffé Mattei. To find more about the churches of Verona take a walk in downtown visiting St. Anastasia, St. Fermo and the Duomo (or choose the historic route). If the weather is good finished the day with a scenic walk on the grounds of the arsenal or enjoying the view from the Roman Theatre.

A pink taxi from the airport to the city centre: a trip on Hello Kitty seat covers, passing shopping centres, Mac Donald’s and highways. Then a minivan till Chinatown: no posh stores, no air conditioned restaurants, no girls with Longchamp anymore: far from Siam Square, centre of “the Good Bangkok” there’s a different life going on. Taxis, old coloured buses and tuc tuc (the asian version of tricycles), fish markets and fruits street traders. A stroll through food stalls and massage centres, among nests of birds, tea vendors and pomegranate juice. Food markets, Chinese shops, Buddist temples and the Royal Palace, before foreshadow the future in an amulet market…The lights of skyscrapers light up in the distance, in this city that never sleeps.

Un taxi rosa shocking dall’aeroporto verso il centro : viaggio su sedili foderati con la faccia di Hello kitty, tra centri commerciali, Mac Donald’s e sopraelevate. Poi minibus fino a Chinatown: qui niente vetrine scintillanti, né aria condizionata, né ragazze firmate Lonchamp: lontano da Siam Square, centro dello shopping e della “Bangkok bene”, è tutta un’altra musica. Si cammina tra tempi e archi cinesi, zizagando tra statue di Buddha sorridenti, sdraiati e di fianco, commercianti d’oro e mercati di pesce, Thai massage e rainbow ice-cream, venditori di thè verde e di succhi di melograno. Per le strade taxi, autobus colorati e tuc tuc (versione asiatica dell’“ape cross” nostrana), bancarelle di imprecisati alimenti sotto sale e ambulanti con spinosi frutti pseudo tropicali. E un grassoccio porcellino di autentico finto oro che augura sorridendo buona fortuna.

In lontananza le luci di mille grattacieli si accendono, a intermittenza, in una città sempre all’erta, che mai dorme.

Siete pronti per Bangkok?

Roma: Due passi a Trastevere, tra pizza, crostate e cioccolato

Roma, via del Moro: nello spazio di centro metri la mia cioccolateria di fiducia e il mio forno prediletto.

Primo step: un pezzo di pizza margherita al forno, alta come una focaccia, con tanta mozzarella, e una fetta di crostata ricotta e cioccolato. Poi una passeggiata digestiva dall’altro parte della strada, fino al numero 37, da Valzani, un negozietto angusto dove il tempo sembrava essersi fermato. Alla cassa sempre la stessa signora ottantenne, Romana doc: da più di cinquant’anni accoglie i turisti con fare burbero e una punta di ironia, alternando battute sul tempo con lamentele sulla crisi morale dell’Italia, invitando gli avventori ad addolcire la triste realtà con una benefica, virtuosa, antiossidante barretta di cioccolato.

E per finire, sì, una passeggiata oltre il ponte, per godermi lo scorcio visionario della città eterna oltre il Tevere fiume: l’isola Tiberina, via del Portico d’Ottavia, Piazza Mattei, Largo di Torre Argentina, Piazza Navona, Via dei Coronari.

Da provare al tramonto, in un pomeriggio primaverile di sole.

A walk in Trastevere, among pizzas, crostata and chocolate

Rome, Via del Moro: there you will find my favourite chocolate shop and bakery.

First of all, have a slice of margherita pizza at the bakery and then a slice of crostata with sweet cheese. Then take a stroll till the other side of the road, where you will find the chocolate shop (37, Via del Moro). The owner is a old lady: since 1970 she welcomes customers suggesting different chocolate for various moods, highlighting its curative power. Finish off with a walk over the bridge, to admire the eternal city behind the Tevere river: Tiberina island, via del Portico d’Ottavia, Piazza Mattei, Largo di Torre Argentina, Piazza Navona, Via dei Coronari.

Try this walk at sunset, in a sunny afternoon.

Da Said, un tempio del cioccolato

Da SAID, dove il cioccolato è di casa da tre generazioni

SAID è un acronimo per “società azionaria industria e dolciumi”. Nato come una fabbrica di cioccolato e dolciumi, si è poi evoluto in una struttura ricettiva che ruota attorno al culto del cioccolato. SAID è un’attività familiare che va avanti da tre generazioni, nata dalla voglia di tramandare una tradizione familiare lunga 90 anni. Le vecchie macchine non sono state toccate e il locale è stato modificato il meno possibile, cercando di dare ai clienti l’impressione di entrare in una vecchia fabbrica di cioccolato. Godetevi una fetta di torta caprese o una selezione di pasticceria sorseggiando una cioccolata calda: dopo un pomeriggio da Said non vorrete più tornare a casa.

Southeast Asia

Let’s start with the first post on my trip to SouthEast Asia.

First of all, my travel itinerary (that I would highly recommend to anybody wanting to have a taste of this part of the world):

-         flying to Bangkok, spend there three days;

-         take a bus north to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, to visit the "Golden Triangle",

-         River crossing into Laos: a cruise on the Mekong, up to Luang Prabang, a fabulous city of wanders, ensnared between temples, wooden houses and mountains,

-         Fly from Luang Prabang to Hanoi, visit the city

-         Take a bus to the fabulous Halong Bay ( with dozens of islands that make the a treasure of incomparable beauty)

-         Head south to Hoi An and Saigon

-         Cross into Cambodia, Phnon Phen and then the wonderful Agkor Wat

Prima di tutto, l’ itinerario di viaggio (che raccomanderei a chiunque voglia scoprire questa parte del globo)

-         volo su Bangkok, tre giorni in città

-         ai nuovo in marcia verso Hoi An, poi Saigon e il delta del Mekong

-         border crossing verso la Cambogia per terminare in bellezza tra le meraviglie di Angkor Wat

Il Parco dei Mostri di Bomarzo

Have you ever heard of the Park of Monsters in Bomarzo ?

70 km from Rome, in the ancient land of the Etruscans a sculpture park was built during the Renaissance, giving birth to a surreal world made ​​of monsters, Gods and giants. This secret garden created in what was once considered a sacred forest. According to the local story Duke Vicino Orsini commissioned the creation of the garden after the death of his wife Giulia Farnese, when he devoted the last years of his life to the improvement of his dwelling. As a result, the garden of his estate began to fill up with stone sculptures of dragons, giants, horses and sea monsters, whose significance is not yet clear ...

A 70 km da Roma, nell'antica terra degli Etruschi, durante il Rinascimento fu costruito un parco di sculture, un mondo surreale fatto di mostri, di dei e di giganti, uno stravagante giardino segreto creato in quello che un tempo era considerato un bosco sacro. La storia vuole che il duca Vicino Orsini ne abbia commissionato la creazione quando, abbattuto per la morte dell’amatissima moglie Giulia Farnese, dedicò i suoi ultimi anni di vita al perfezionamento della sua dimora. Così il giardino della sua tenuta si popolò di draghi, giganti, cavalli alati, nettuni e mostri marini, in un labirinto fantastico sul cui significato ancora non si è fatta luce…
